Project Title: Being an Effective Athletic Trainer
Problem Statement for Project:
You are planning on becoming an athletic trainer. Nearly all states require athletic trainers to be licensed or certified. How can you determine what the specific requirements for Wisconsin licensing are? As a healthcare provider, why does the athletic trainer work so closely with the team physician? How does the athletic trainer plan athletic programs that are compliant with federal and state regulations (laws)?
Learning Goals & Objectives:
Student will demonstrate the ability to use the scientific principles of exercise physiology, social psychology (adherence), and biomechanics as an aspiring athletic trainer:
-
Analyze comprehensive programming that is implemented to prevent injury and illness among athletes.
-
Education needed to become an athletic trainer (high school courses, accredited bachelor and master degrees, AT residency programs).
-
Licensing or certification requirements.
-
-
Assess the administrative tasks of an athletic trainer.
-
Keeping appropriate records, writing reports, and communicating with the healthcare team about injuries and treatment programs.
-
Documentation and coding guidelines to record and analyze data.
-
Athletic programs that are compliant with federal and state regulations (ensure program adheres to laws).
-
-
Describe recognizing and evaluating specific injuries and treatment options for treating a patient.
-
Describe protective or injury-preventive devices, such as tape, bandages, and braces.
-
Providing first aid or emergency care.
-
Developing and carrying out rehabilitation programs for injured athletes.
-
-
Reassess athletic training program.
-
Analyze the utilization of current safety practices as it relates to prevention of injury.
-
Analyze data and examine the athletic trainers' goals of preventing, diagnosing, and treating muscle and bone injuries and illnesses.
-
Modify athletic training program based on age and skill level (compare and contrast child athletes, soldiers, and professional athletes).
-
The process that I used to approach my inquiry was the scientific method.
According to Google, the Scientific Method is: "a method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses."
