Unit 3: Study of Athletic Trainer Social Psychological Principles & Practices
Name of Experiment: How should an Athletic Trainer poise themselves? What are the procedures of practice appropriate for an Athlete Trainer?
Research:
Following correct rules and procedures is essential for an Athletic Trainer. They must be able to treat people fairly to the best of their ability and always do what is best. The National Athletic Trainers Association, or NATA, has a list of principles they must follow.
The list includes:
-
members shall respect the rights, welfare, and dignity of all
-
Members shall comply with the laws and regulations governing the practice of athletic training
-
Members shall maintain and promote high standards in their provision of services
-
Members shall not engage in conduct that could be construed as a conflict of interest or that reflects negatively on the profession
New technology is constantly being created. Medical professionals need to know how to use all the stuff when it comes out immediately so the patients can get the best care. This is the same with Athletic Trainers. They need to know how to use the most up-to-date equipment so their injured-athletes can get the best care. Once a person has earned ATC after their name, they are required to continue their education. One big factor in this is they have to maintain their professional rescuer CPR certification. Every three years an Athletic Trainer must provide proof of a current CPR certificate.
Communication is a must have to be an Athletic Trainer. Whether you work at a high school, college, professional facility, or sports medicine clinic, communication is a skill that needs to be at the absolute least, good. Athletic Trainers communicate with athletes, parents, physicians, coaches, and administrators at every level. If the right message is not brought across, it can result in many hours of anxiety and negative consequences. Listening is a huge factor in the profession also. You should be attentive and open-minded, establish good eye contact because direct eye contact sends the message that what you are discussing is important. Gestures are important also, is a person is crossing their arms, they may be thought of as closed off, or that he isn’t listening or paying attention.
As a student assistant, dressing professionally can project a nice image of oneself. Shorts, tennis shoes, and a t-shirt are okay during practice or game coverage in warm-weather activities. Looking professional when you need to us important so that if someone needs to find you they can pick you out easily in an emergency. Problems of today cannot be solved by yesterday’s solutions. It is important to help develop new technology and ideas to keep everything advancing.
Athletic Trainers must be able to help resolve conflicts. They must be able to manage stress while remaining calm and alert, controlling behavior and emotion, paying attention to the feelings being expressed as well as the spoken words of others, and being aware of and respectful of differences.
Healthy responses to conflict include:
-
The capacity to recognize and respond to important matters
-
A readiness to forgive and forget
-
The ability to seek compromise and avoid punishing
-
A belief that resolution can support the interests and needs of both parties
Leisure and sports activities play an important role in communities. Their benefits include improving health and the well-being of the individual, contributing to the empowerment of individuals, and promoting the development of inclusive communities. Recreation, leisure, and sports activities may involve individuals, small groups, teams, or whole communities and are relevant to people of all different ages, abilities, and levels of skill.
Analysis:
Athletic trainers typically do the following:
-
Apply protective or injury-preventive devices, such as tape, bandages, and braces
-
Recognize and evaluate injuries
-
Provide first aid or emergency care
-
Develop and carry out rehabilitation programs for injured athletes
-
Plan and implement comprehensive programs to prevent injury and illness among athletes
-
Perform administrative tasks, such as keeping records and writing reports on injuries and treatment programs
Conclusion:
Athletic trainers work with people of all ages and all skill levels, from young children to soldiers and professional athletes. They are usually one of the first healthcare providers on the scene when injuries occur on the field. They work under the direction of a licensed physician and with other healthcare providers, often discussing specific injuries and treatment options or evaluating and treating patients, as directed by a physician. Some athletic trainers meet with team physicians or consult a physician regularly. An athletic trainer's administrative responsibilities may include regular meetings with an athletic director or another administrative officer to deal with budgets, purchasing, policy implementation, and other business-related issues.
